Am I Hungry?

I was watching Oprah last week and there was a great segment on the show about losing weight.  This was from a book by Geneen Roth titled Women, Food and God.  One of Geneen’s ideas is to ask yourself some questions before you go to eat more food.  So when you reach for some food ask yourself – Am I hungry?  Am I really truely hungry?  If the answer is yes well of course eat  something healthy!  But if the answer is no I’m not then the next question to ask yourself is What am I hungry for?  I found this to be a very clever question.  Because if I’m not hungry for food then what is it that I do need?  What am I really really hungry for?   Then find it or ask for it.

Roth has taken the sum total of her experience and combined it with spirituality and psychology to explain women’s true hunger. Roth’s approach to eating is that it is the same as any addiction – an activity to avoid feeling emotions.  From the first page, readers will be struck by the author’s intelligence, humour and sensitivity, as she traces the path of overeating from its subtle beginnings through to its logical end. Whether the drug is booze or brownies, the problem is the same: opting out of life. She powerfully urges readers to pay attention to what they truly need – which cannot be found in a supermarket

In an excerpt from Women, Food, and God, Geneen Roth shares seven guidelines to eating more consciously.
  • Eat when you are hungry.
  • Eat sitting down in a calm environment. This does not include the car.
  • Eat without distractions. Distractions include radio, television, newspapers, books, intense or anxiety-producing conversations or music.
  • Eat what your body wants.
  • Eat until you are satisfied.
  • Eat (with the intention of being) in full view of others.
  • Eat with enjoyment, gusto and pleasure.
