Life Coaching and Career Choices | Turning on to Social Media

Life and Career Coaching. Your choice? As a life and career coach my day is busy as I focus on my client’s whether student or professional person assisting them with their career and life goals.

Yes I have been dragging the chain with Social Media communications but last week finally getting things sorted and got some help to progress this area, from Cathy Mellett at Netbranding, in both my business and personal areas.  It gave me pause to think more closely about this forum, how I want to use it and how it can be misused.

I do think Social Media needs to be about balance.  Let’s be clear Facebook or some other social media forums should not be a replacement for communicating with each other.  It certainly can enhance and assist us to keep in communication, send photo’s of travels and fun times, keep in touch easily with people overseas and share stories.  But good friendships are about intimacy – In-to-me-you-see – short comments on twitter or Facebook won’t enable people to really share what is going on for them.  And also we can get it wrong!  We can misinterpret what someone means or their intent in these quick communication flashes.   I wonder if those growing up with social media understand the difference?  I know of teenagers who think their best friend is someone on Facebook but they have never met them!

As a life coach and mentor to young teenagers and student, discussing their social media networking profiles as a future point for employers to review is an important element for a young adult to embrace.  We often reflect on this during our one-on-one career and life coaching programs.

I will certainly communicate  more often now through social media but I like nothing better than picking up the phone talking directly with people with all the subtleties, nuances and feelings that a voice contributes.

What are you afraid of?

Quote – “I’ve been absolutely terrified every moment of my life and I’ve never let it keep me from doing a single thing that I wanted to do“.  Georgia O’Keefe

I love the quote above.   Many people are afraid a lot of the time but it’s how much we let the fear control what we do or don’t do that makes the difference to living a full life.  Fear can of course be a warning of danger but can also motivate us to make changes and be a call to take action.  Life Coach Cheryl Richardson believes 3 things need to be present in order to manage fear.

1. Friends.  Too many of us try to do things alone.  The minute you notice feelings of fear and know that you can’t push through it find someone who may be able to help and support you.

2. Facts.  Sometimes we just don’ t have enough information to be able to move forward and make decisions.  We even blame it on being indecisive but often we just need more information.  Sometimes we try to do things and take action without having all the facts that will reassure us.   Find out as much as you can about the topic, issue or area you have fears about.  Once you have all the information this can be reassuring and lessen the fear.  Fear won’t necessarily go away but it will diminish.

3. Faith.  So once you have support in place and have all the information you need then of course you will need to leap!  Take action in spite of the fear and have faith that things will work out in the way they are meant to, whichever way that is!

I Am Grateful!

Today I am grateful for the life I have.  So often we look at life for what we don’t have or what we want to change.  Well today quite simply it’s about what is and feeling  happily grateful for that.  No I’m not even going to mention the miseries in the world today it’s all about satisfaction!

I’m grateful for the wonderful people I have in my life.  My amazing partner who just keeps on listening, understanding and supporting me.  Everything I throw at him he takes so well and keeps engaging and meeting me.   And what a domestic God!  I’m grateful for lovely friends who are always there when needed for a laugh or a cry.  I’m grateful for all the opportunities there are out there.

So much the world has to offer, New Zealand has to offer and Auckland has to offer.  Anything I want to do is available if I choose.  For today I am grateful, grateful for who I am,  so very very grateful for a warm bed every night, yummy food whenever I choose, being able to buy a  house, being able to walk most places and feel safe, go to a movie whenever I like and engage in sports or hobbies that give me heartfelt joy.

I AM VERY VERY GRATEFUL TODAY.
