At times like these when we have people in danger, this time down the Pike Coal Mine, I find it interesting the way people link in to God or some higher power. At times like these we will pray, we will go to a church service, we will ask God to take care of loved ones and bring them home safe, we may talk directly to a minister or priest or even abuse God because he isn’t doing enough. But in our normal every day lives usually we are not actively engaging in God. This is also reflected by statistics that our community is rapidly moving away from religion and churches which holds at its centre – God. So I’m wondering what this means for the community we live in? I think we do need a source of comfort to talk to or relate to in times of need. It is comforting to talk to a higher being and to pray and like the Pike Coal Mine clearly for many God still does have a place in our society, despite our trying not to.
So how can churches provide a new brand and new ways so that it is more attractive to people? The challenge for churches so that they do not become extinct is how do they modernise religion and take away the dogma that often surrounds it at present?
