Who says Passion has to be expressed in a job? Of course you can’t hate your job but being ok with your job is fine as long as you have exciting things happening outside of work. A job being just ok isn’t good enough if there isn’t much else in your life that you are fulfilled in.
Part of the process I use in career work is to find out what lights up a person. Is it for instance working with your hands working with a particular product or helping people? For some people it is the outcome, others the process or both. But sometimes it is really tricky for passion to be part of work. For instance those who love animals. They may not have the academics to be a vet, don’t want to be a farmer and other options like dog trainer doesn’t make enough money for them. So in this case the person’s normal job may involve being an administrator for the SPCA so at least they are in an animal environment. Another option is to not work in an animal environment at all but as a hobby they could well train dogs. Sport can be a similar issue. Love to play and be in it but not able to make the All Blacks or Silver Fern teams! Volunteering is useful here – keep playing a sport you love and become involved with sports clubs in the community. You may be an artist but need to put good money on the table in the early years of your creative development. Most important that this creativity is kept up in your spare time. If you’re an accountant but like to help people, volunteer at Youthline or Lifeline. Remember we are MORE than our jobs. There is a lot of life outside work and having fulfillment in our non work time will motivate us in our work time and create a “whole” life.
